MySpace home/login page ads and design getting ridiculous

Just me or are you getting sick of the ad/flash overloaded MySpace home and login pages? Seems like their site design just gets worse and worse, slower and slower.

Yeah, I know the ads pay for it, but it’s gone way beyond rediculous and seems to only get worse over time. It’s so bad lately, that some IDS systems are hitting on some of their “EMBED” directives. Geez, who is writting that HTML code for them? Not to mention how much of a pain it is to login with all that flash activity going on (Flash Block for Firefox is a wonderful thing).

I’m to the point anymore I only login to post a blog or deal with incoming msgs/comments. Many of my friends on there are the same way. FYI, you can set it up to notify you via email of new mail/comments, that way you don’t have to check their horribly designed site often, only when you need to address something.

A fresh load of the homepage is a 3mb plus download to just load the home page in. What idiots! Thankfully I’m on broadband, but can you imagine what it’s like for the dialup users? Hey MySpace, a good chunk of the internet is still on dialup, not everyone has broadband. Get a clue about site design, especially the front door pages.

I’ve actually seen the users browser “lock up” on slower machines that can’t deal with all that crap, in which I recommend a tweaked FireFox install w/ Adblock and Flashblock. Those two utilities can tame down these poorly implemented sites and make dialup connections tolerable and high speed connections really scream. Outside of a few sites that you really need Flash for (aka YouTube, ustream.tv so forth), you’ll probably find that the internet works fine without a ton of distracting and bandwidth sucking Flash and ad content.
